Client: Downing Living
Industry / Sector: Residential Development
Location: Manchester, United Kingdom
Downing Living is an established residential developer with over 35 years of experience in creating places for people to live, work, and enjoy. They focus on delivering excellent rental experiences in city centre locations across the UK, emphasizing comfort and convenience. Their latest project, Square Gardens in Manchester, introduces a new generation of co-living spaces designed to foster community and sustainable living.
Downing Living sought to create a co-living development that would redefine urban rental experiences. The goal was to design and furnish various living spaces, including co-living units, studios, and apartments, complemented by extensive shared amenities such as a gym, wellness centre, co-working spaces, lounges, and private dining areas. The furniture needed to reflect a modern, vibrant aesthetic while ensuring durability and comfort for residents.
Diverse Functional Requirements: The project encompassed a variety of spaces, each with unique functional needs, requiring versatile furniture solutions.
Aesthetic Consistency: Maintaining a cohesive design language across different areas while catering to varied resident preferences.
Sustainability: Aligning with Downing Living's commitment to sustainable living by sourcing eco-friendly materials and ensuring responsible manufacturing processes.
Timeline: Coordinating with ongoing construction phases to ensure timely installation without disrupting other development activities.
Our design team collaborated closely with Downing Living to develop bespoke furniture solutions tailored to each space within Square Gardens.
Design Workshops: Conducted sessions with stakeholders to understand the vision and functional requirements of each area.
Material Selection: Chosen for durability, comfort, and environmental sustainability, ensuring longevity and minimal ecological impact.
Prototyping: Developed prototypes for key furniture pieces to test functionality and aesthetics, allowing for refinements before final production.
Installation Coordination: Worked in tandem with construction schedules to install furniture efficiently, ensuring readiness for resident move-in dates.
Square Gardens is a substantial development comprising multiple buildings with varying heights:
The Fernley: A 45-storey tower standing at 139 meters, making it one of the tallest buildings in Greater Manchester.
Acer Tower: A 25-storey building that is part of the initial phase of the development.
Additional Buildings: Structures of 22 and 17 storeys complement the main towers.
Collectively, the development offers approximately 2,200 residential units, encompassing co-living spaces, studios, and traditional apartments.
The interior design of Square Gardens emphasizes modernity and comfort. Spaces are adorned with bespoke furniture pieces that enhance the contemporary aesthetic. Features include integrated appliances, comfortable living areas, and floor-to-ceiling windows offering expansive views of Manchester.
To meet the diverse needs of the development, our team designed and manufactured approximately 4,000+ bespoke furniture pieces. This includes seating, fixed seating, tables, storage units, and specialty items tailored to the specific requirements of each space within Square Gardens.
As the project is still underway, final results and testimonials will be provided upon completion. Initial feedback from stakeholders has been positive, highlighting the quality and design of the bespoke furniture pieces.
